= Silent lights & splendid nights =

"I'm flying!" cried the girl.

She shouted in her heart anyway because all she could do right now was gawk at the rooftops and clothes lines and trees passing below her. She stopped feeling uneasy a while ago, holding on to her companion's hand. It was big, white and strong, its grip firm enough to ease her fears away.

She turned to her right where her new friend was. He looked very strange. His skin was all white. And he had long white hair. Which was nice. She found out he could use it to climb down from the door in the sky. That's where he came from. She thought it was a very strange place to put a door. But he said there was no other way for it.

She wondered why he only had two eyes on his face and nothing much else. His eyes were golden like her hair. And when he looked at her, she saw something familiar in there... in his head. She couldn't figure out what this familiar thing was yet. But she still knew it was there, and felt... comforted... looking into those eyes. Safe. And she guessed that's why she found it so easy to be his friend. Because they sorta knew each other already. Even though she was sure they've never met before.

She grinned from ear to ear. They were whisking higher and higher into the air. The city and all its buildings and cars and buses were getting smaller... the endless noise further... Until all she could see below was silently twinkling golden light against a dark, velvet background.

The girl and her friend soon came to hover in the cool air. He held her securely in his arms while they watched the world below. It was nice up here. Like she imagined it would be. It felt lonely... but in a good way.

Just above them was a thin carpet of cloud covering the sky. The moon was hidden behind them. It made the clouds glow gently. She looked up at the clouds and thought they were like a ceiling. She looked at her friend, and he smiled with his eyes. He was thinking the same thing too! She laughed and waved her arms up, trying to touch the moon.

"It's further than you think," he said.

"I can reach it."

She looked very determined in a childlike way.

"You'll get there one day. I'm sure. We shouldn't stay out here too long though."

Her smile faded just a little.

"I like it here," she said. "It's quiet. Not like home."

"Ah... ... yes."

There were some things that didn't need more saying. Because they both knew exactly what the other meant.

The two of them gazed upon the moon lit world for some time. Shadows of clouds made interesting patterns on the land. They did little to distract the girl from her memories. Fresh and old ones... They surfaced in the girl's head again like thick, bubbling tar. The sounds... loud, clashing, raging sounds… She would always hear them… and always remember them. And it hurt when she realized that she couldn't get away from it all, even from up here.

She shook her head and made a sad noise. Her friend, sensing the shudder in her soul, held her tighter.

"Is it noisy in your home?" she asked softly. Young faces shouldn't frown like that.

He took some time to consider this.

He thought of his own home. His current one anyway. And how it was filled with all those amazing new people with amazing new personalities.

Before he came here, he only knew one kind of life. It was a dreadfully lonely one... and dangerous too. He didn't consider any of the creatures around him friends. Oh they acted like that when they wanted something from you. Only when it was good for them. And you did the same if you knew what was good for you too. And if you didn’t… things would certainly get nasty. So in his head, he decided that being alone was the best thing for him. And he did all he could to make sure nobody wanted to be his friend. Ever. He got surprisingly good at that. Many around him had the scars to prove it.

Now, however, he was in this new and completely different place... with a completely strange bunch of people who just wanted to be his friend because… they wanted to. No strings attached. Things were awkward at first.... But then that was to be expected when starting a new life. And then, he discovered a funny thing. Over time, it gradually dawned on him that while he desired this refreshingly new kind of companionship, he was also extremely comfortable with his grungy old kind of loneliness!

This meant that all those strange and wonderful personalities, when put together at the right time and right place, really grated on his every nerve to no end!

It drove him crazy. He really couldn't understand why this was so. And the thoughts nagged at him daily… or at least at those times when he felt very frustrated with everyone. He sighed… But strangely enough… in spite of all these tangled up feelings… and questions yet unanswered… he still knew in his heart… that when he was around them... there was always a wonderful sense of familiarity... an all embracing comfort... and a peaceful feeling of safety...

He breathed.

"... very. It is very noisy where I live... But... not that kind of noisy."

"What kind then?"

He looked into her face. Her eyes could swallow up oceans.

"The... nice kind..." He smiled. "I can show you... I'm sure my family would love to see you."

"Would they?" her eyes sparkled.

"They would."

He reached into his belt pouch and drew out some twinkling dust. She ooh-ed at the sight of it and watched in fascination as he sprinkled the sky in front of them with it. The dust stayed in the air and looked like flat ground.

He drifted carefully to it and touched the dust with the tip of his toes. Then stood firm. And lowered the girl onto the dusty surface itself. She couldn't help but laugh with excitement. It sounded like bells. As solid as the dust was, she could still see past it to get a very vague glimpse of the city below her.

She edged her way to the end of the dusty surface. Crouching down, she waved her hand beyond the dust and found that it was cool air. She looked up and saw her friend use the same glittery dust to draw out a rectangle in the sky. From the sparkling ground to just above his head. It was a big door.

The rectangle glowed brilliantly. And with one firm push, the white man opened the door to a strange new world.

She stared, mouth opened, breath held just so... her eyes reflecting the spectacle from beyond the door. The colors! She'd never seen such colors!

She looked up and saw her new friend quietly offering his hand to her. She took it shyly... yet with great assurance that everything was alright.

And though she knew she had to be back home by dawn, she had a good feeling... that this was going to be the best time she'd ever dreamed of.

Oh my goodness I am submitting writing. That has not happened before XD~~

It's quite simple because writing is not one of my stronger points. If I'm not careful, I use too much descriptive language while sounding generic.

This was drafted between 1 am and 4 am in the morning some day ago after watching another strangely hilarious episode of Boston Legal. Didn't want to overkill the editing, but if u have helpful pointers in improving the writing, i don't mind hearing it XD So here it is... Hope ye likes... haha...

Very beautiful, in a completely innocent way. I think your writing style is very easy to read and has a nice steady flow to it. Well done.

The child's voice in this piece was superb. The innocence, and the way that the white-haired character (Ohm, I believe?) seemed to appreciate that was beautiful. I especially loved the line "Young faces shouldn't frown like that." I also loved how you seemed to imply the child's troubles in the waking world, but never making them very clear, instead having her visualize them as dark clouds and bubbling tar. Things are never straightforward in dreams, and I like how you play up to that.

Overall, this was an excellent piece, and very engaging. Lovely.

'Have you lost your way home?'
She sings

You should write more! :D Your style flows easily and manages to capture a lot of feeling, in few words. A rare skill and a good one. :D

Haha would you think about doing this in a picture book form? It would be really nice to kinda see this story accompanied by illustrations, like Ohm and the girl together!

This was really exciting for me, because I've always wondered how they transitioned between the dream world/Flux Studios and the real(?) world. I also like the little insight into Ohm's past, and how he sees the Studio. So much fun, thank you for sharing! :3

Should I ever marry, Watson, I should hope to inspire my wife with some feeling which would prevent her from being walked off by a housekeeper when my corpse was lying within a few yards of her.

I've never read anything like this. It felt like I was experiencing wonder again in my jaded life. I hope the story doesn't end here.

^_^ I thought it was rather beautiful. Definitly a +fav.

I like how simply it was written, there's a sort of purity in that. In how you used only just enough description. You don't see stuff like that often.

You left alot of things open to the imagination, which is something I prefer. You can sorta take the story however you want it while you're reading it, and depending on the person the meaning changes. I really wish I could write like you.
